Quick answer

Water extraction is the first physical step of flood cleanup. Technicians remove standing water with submersible pumps and truck mounted or portable extractors, then lift saturated carpet pad and begin structural drying. Removing bulk water quickly cuts total drying time and the amount of material that has to be thrown away.

How water extraction works

Pumps handle deep water. Extractors pull water out of carpet, pad and hard surfaces. Wet pad is almost always removed because it holds water like a sponge and dries slowly. Carpet can sometimes be lifted, cleaned and dried in place when the water was clean and the response was fast.

Flood cleanup after a monsoon storm

Storm water is different from a broken supply line. It can carry mud, bacteria and debris, and it is generally treated as contaminated. That usually means removing porous materials such as carpet, pad and lower drywall, and disinfecting hard surfaces. See our guide on monsoon flood damage in Arizona for what to expect.

What happens after the water is out

  • Moisture mapping of floors, walls and ceilings
  • Air movers and dehumidifiers placed to dry the structure
  • Daily readings until materials reach dry standards
  • Cleaning and sanitizing of affected areas
  • A written scope for any repairs that follow

Water categories matter

The ANSI and IICRC S500 standard groups water into three categories, from clean supply water to grossly contaminated water. The category sets how much can be dried in place and what must be removed. Read more in our guide to water damage categories and classes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does water extraction take?

Pulling standing water from a typical room often takes a few hours. Full drying afterward usually takes three to five days, depending on materials and conditions.

Is flood water safe to touch?

Treat storm and ground water as contaminated. Wear boots and gloves, keep children and pets out, and avoid it entirely if electricity may be involved.

Can wet carpet be saved?

Sometimes. Carpet soaked by clean water and treated quickly can often be dried in place. Carpet soaked by contaminated water is normally removed.

Does homeowners insurance cover flood cleanup?

Standard homeowners policies usually exclude rising flood water but may cover sudden pipe or appliance failures. Flood coverage is separate and often has a 30 day wait. Check FloodSmart.gov and your policy.
